For Heather Heyer

James Fields is an outlier. He’s not representative of the mainstream conservative movement in this country. James Fields deserves the punishment that our government system finds necessary to punish his heinous act and to attempt deterrence.

If you’re not familiar with who he is, here is a short refresher. He is a white nationalist who ran down a woman in Charlottesville, VA, killing her. Little more about his life need be said. He’s defined by this horrific and grotesque moment.

Republicans, rational Nationalist, and conservatives must denounce these animals. It’s not enough to point out the truth that they are a very small segment. The fact is that they attract the media and are a loud and vocal minority. It’s the job of the sensible ones to speak out and to do so as loudly as possible.

Racism has no place in my party. That’s not to say that realities of institutionalized racism be ignored. It’s simply not enough to say, “I don’t see color.” Sure, it’s a lofty goal, but in saying it, you ignore the truth that for many, their color is all many do see.

I despise the organized Antifa movement. I could spend days discussing why and easily point out the flaws of the communist beliefs they espouse. Calling out the marginal right that grab on to equally awful and racists attacks does not negate that.

One can at the same time recognize the flaws on both sides and call them out with fervor. It’s incumbent on us to seek out the similarities and to discuss the differences as calmly and respectfully as possible.
